Afterwards, Doris, who has by now fallen for D, tries to convince him to live with her and embraces him. He is then shot at by Dan and falls down a cliff. Rei takes Dan hostage to lure D out into the open, and D comes to his rescue, cutting off Rei's hand in the process and discovering that the candle is a fake. With the purchase in 1963 of 126 Speedee Mart (all already open 7–11) franchised convenience stores in California, the company entered the franchise business. In 1971, Southland acquired convenience stores of the former Pak-A-Sak chain owned by Graham Allen Penniman Sr. Later on, 24-hour stores were established in Fort Worth and Dallas, Texas, as well as Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1963, 7-Eleven experimented with a 24-hour schedule in Austin, Texas, after an Austin store stayed open all night to satisfy customer demand. In 1946, in an effort to continue the company's post-war recovery, the name of the franchise was changed to 7-Eleven to reflect the stores' new hours of operation (7 am to 11 pm), which were unprecedented at the time. This brought the company's ownership under the control of a board of directors. A Dallas banker, W. W. Overton Jr., also helped to revive the company's finances by selling the company's bonds for seven cents on the dollar. Nevertheless, the company continued its operations through re-organization and receivership. In 1931, the Great Depression affected the company, sending it toward bankruptcy. This became the major factor in the company's success as a retail convenience store. Southland also started to have a uniform for its ice station service boys. Joe Thompson also provided a distinct characteristic to the company's stores, training the staff so that people would receive the same quality and service in every store. In the same year, the company began constructing filling stations in some of its Dallas locations as an experiment. Later on, the stores began operating under the name "Tote'm Stores". Soon, executives added totem poles in front of every store and eventually adopted an Alaska Native-inspired theme for their stores. The pole served as a marketing tool for the company, as it attracted a great deal of attention. In 1928, a manager named Jenna Lira brought a totem pole as a souvenir from Alaska and placed it in front of her store. Thompson eventually bought the Southland Ice Company and turned it into the Southland Corporation, which oversaw several locations in the Dallas area. Although small grocery stores and general merchandisers were available, Thompson theorized that selling products such as bread and milk in convenience stores would reduce the need for customers to travel long distances for basic items. In 1927, Southland Ice Company employee John Jefferson Green began selling ice, then he started selling eggs, milk, and bread from one of 16 ice house storefronts in Dallas, with permission from one of Southland's founding directors, Joe C. She suggested the change "to make the logo look more graceful." History Thompson Sr., the company's president during the 1960s, thought the all-capitals version seemed a little aggressive. In November 1999, the corporate name of the US company was changed from "The Southland Corporation" to "7-Eleven Inc." įollowing 7-Eleven's adoption of its current logo in 1968, a lowercase n was used in the logo because the first wife of John P. In 1946, the chain's name was changed from "Tote'm" to "7-Eleven" to reflect the company's new, extended hours, 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, seven days per week. Some stores featured "native" totem poles in front of the store. The company's first outlets were in Dallas, named "Tote'm Stores" because customers "toted" away their purchases. 7-Eleven also operates A-Plus locations with the name licensed from owner and fellow Metroplex-based Energy Transfer Partners, though most of these stores have since been rebranded as standard 7-Eleven stores. While operating under its namesake brand globally, within the United States it operates as 7-Eleven nationally, as Speedway nationally but mostly in the Midwest & East Coast, and as Stripes Convenience Stores within the South Central United States both Speedway and Stripes operate alongside 7-Eleven's namesake stores in several markets. ħ-Eleven operates, franchises, and licenses 78,029 stores in 19 countries and territories as of November 2021. After Ito-Yokado, a Japanese supermarket chain and the parent company of Seven-Eleven Japan, acquired a 70% stake in the company in 1991, the company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Seven-Eleven Japan in November, 2005. The chain was founded in 1927 as an ice house storefront in Dallas. The client has it easy if the host uses the on-demand option. Otherwise, enter the code and provided by the client so that they can have always-on access to the host computer. If you choose the run option instead of the install option, you're given a user code and password that the client needs to reach the computer. The host has two options: download the DWAgent, and then run it for on-demand, one-time access (great for tech support), or install it for permanent remote access (ideal if it's your own computer). I list it as #1 for two reasons: it's incredibly easy to use for both myself and the people on the other end of the session, and it has useful tools I need to identify and fix problems remotely. This is the tool I used the last several times I remoted into a family member's computer for remote tech support. Your brain will be fooled and will interpret it as a a sound that is continuously “going down”. Unless if you carefully listen to the clip, you’ll never quite be able to find the exact point at which one loop ends and the next loop begins. These loops have been placed one after the other – or stitched together – much like a panoramic image you might take with your smartphone. It’s actually a much smaller loop of a sound that begins at a high point and then drops down, going lower and lower. In other words, it sounds very much like a tone that is continuously going down… only, it isn’t. This creates the auditory illusion of a tone that continually ascends or descends in pitch, yet which ultimately seems to get no higher or lower.” When played with the base pitch of the tone moving upward or downward, it is referred to as the Shepard scale. This sound is known as a Shepard tone, named after Roger Shepard, and is a sound consisting of “a superposition of sine waves separated by octaves. One of the more famous auditory illusions is the Shepard Tone auditory illusion. But auditory illusions can also occur – and they’re just as weird. You’re likely more familiar with optical illusions, as they are frequently shared in social media circles. Our brains are incredibly powerful, but as we all know, they can be fooled with illusions of any sense. The information is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Sickle cell anemia can lead to a host of complications, including: This can damage the retina - the portion of the eye that processes visual images - and lead to vision problems. Tiny blood vessels that supply the eyes can become plugged with sickle cells. A shortage of healthy red blood cells can slow growth in infants and children and delay puberty in teenagers. Red blood cells provide the body with the oxygen and nutrients needed for growth. Infants and children with sickle cell anemia commonly receive vaccinations and antibiotics to prevent potentially life-threatening infections, such as pneumonia. Sickle cells can damage the spleen, increasing vulnerability to infections. The swelling is caused by sickle-shaped red blood cells blocking blood circulation in the hands and feet. Some adolescents and adults with sickle cell anemia also have chronic pain, which can result from bone and joint damage, ulcers, and other causes. A severe pain crisis requires a hospital stay. Some people have only a few pain crises a year. The pain varies in intensity and can last for a few hours to a few days. Pain develops when sickle-shaped red blood cells block blood flow through tiny blood vessels to your chest, abdomen and joints. Periodic episodes of extreme pain, called pain crises, are a major symptom of sickle cell anemia. Without enough red blood cells, the body can't get enough oxygen and this causes fatigue.Įpisodes of pain. But sickle cells typically die in 10 to 20 days, leaving a shortage of red blood cells (anemia). Red blood cells usually live for about 120 days before they need to be replaced. They vary from person to person and may change over time. Data were taken from Monteiro et al., 1989 Nagel and Ranney, 1990 Oner et al., 1992 Rahimi et al., 2003 Schroeder et al., 1990 and references therein.Signs and symptoms of sickle cell anemia usually appear around 6 months of age. Because the number of patients per study and the population ascertainment methods are highly variable, the colors denote only the relative frequency of each haplotype within a given study group. The haplotype data represented in this image were summarized from genetic epidemiological studies of sickle-cell patients across different regions. Indeed, these haplotypes are not restricted to the appellate nation, and they can be found broadly distributed (i.e., Benin haplotype in multiple nations, or multiple haplotypes within a single nation). Each color represents a different haplotype named after the country in which it was first discovered, not necessarily its genetic origin. Five distinct beta-globin haplotypes (indicated by colors) are found in patients with sickle-cell anemia. On this map, the distribution of sickle-cell anemia haplotypes among nations with high prevalence of the disease are shown. |
